Who are we?
Nestled between the mountains of Hout Bay is the Amani House, a bed and breakfast focused and built upon sustainable living. The land which Amani House currently sits on was purchased in 2010 by a visionary with the intent to create an eco friendly oasis. The original plan was to renovate the existing structure but fortunately for Ans, the proprietor, the walls collapsed. Instead of seeing this as a setback she realized that this was an opportunity to rebuild using truly sustainable practices. The most amazing part of this bed and breakfast is the fact that almost all the materials used to build it were harvested from the property. The sand and clay from excavation were utilized to make the adobe bricks for the structure. The wood used in the main house is from gum trees (eucalyptus), a non indigenous tree to the Western Cape. It was important to remove these trees from the ground on the property to allow for the growth of native plants. This act restored the natural balance of this delicate eco system and provided the wood necessary to build both furniture and structural framing. The entire project took two years to complete. The property now boasts a three bedroom house, a one bedroom cottage, a double wide garage complete with a studio on the second level, and a natural swimming pool. As part of the Amani Initiative we sourced all our labor from the local workforce.
Ans’ idea behind Amani House is to showcase what Mother Nature has to offer, and how to incorporate a sustainable way of living into our modern day lives. Recycling materials, repurposing furniture, implementing a grey water system and using water from the newly created borehole on the property are just a few of the practices Ans used to create this retreat.
